The spread of computer technologies and the appearance of the internet inconceivably facilitated attaining degrees and e-learning. Nowadays distant learning is a profitable option for many students as it gives an opportunity one to get education from home just with the help of a personal computer and without physical attending a college or university. In order to give a helping hand to students and their tutors there was made one of the most important contributions to the branch of distant learning. Online Learning And Training (OLAT) is one of such software applications.
It was developed in the University of Zurich and introduced in 1999. At present The OLAT is known as a free software or an open source, according to the UNESCO it has been given the highest gradation and was rewarded with the MeDiDa Prix in 2000. It should be pointed out, that the most important thing is that the online studying management systems like OLAT demand concrete basic tools as PostgreSQL, Tomcat Servlet Engine, Java SDK etc. A number of important online standards like IMS Content Packaging, IMS QTI and SCORM function only in case of their support by OLAT.
The OLAT affords an opportunity to use any online studying platform, which contains chats, surveys, gradation modules and exercise modules, blogs, quizzing, wikis, content management, multi-language support systems, forums and file discussions. The use of OLAT is possible in all the wide - spread operating systems like Windows, FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, Unix and OpenBSD, not requiring any kind of alteration or change. In 2008 the latest version of OLAT was put on the market.
The reviewed basic features of OLAT prove the real facilitating of the online education and its’ availability to ease the process of distant learning.
